Salt container that has tipped over

They may seem like modest household objects, but in fact, these are the unsung heroes of the modern family pantry. They can rescue a table cloth from the brink of red wine destruction or help you to relieve dry, cracked feet with some unconventional but tender loving care. All at a fraction of the cost of a specially designed product. So, here are some useful household products every modern family should know about.

Salt

Sure, it’s a great seasoning and can instantly lift your favourite dessert from overly sweet to perfectly balanced, but salt is also one of those household items that has loads of different and pretty important functions.

For example, salt is a great way to get red wine stains out of fabric. Simply blot the area with a clean cloth to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Next, cover the stain with plenty of table salt, making sure the whole area is liberally coated. Leave it to stand and absorb for about 10 minutes and launder the item as normal. On a couch or a carpet, you can leave the salt to dry and vacuum it up, followed by a light dabbing with a damp cloth.

Bright colours are prone to running and fading, especially during their first few washes. Another great use for salt is it keeps your brightly coloured laundry from fading. This includes towels and bedding.

So for the first few washes of any brightly coloured fabric, simply add 1-2 cups of salt into the washing machine drum, and it’ll help prevent any colour-running and set the dye – keeping it brighter for longer.

Petroleum Jelly

An oldie but a goodie, Vaseline petroleum jelly is a great item to keep in your cupboard. It can be used to tame frizzy hair, seal dry, split ends, and even to keep unruly eyebrows in place.

Beyond beauty, Vaseline is great for refreshing leather products and helping to soften hard or worn areas of your leather goods. It’s also a good polish for scuffed leather shoes and bags, especially if it’s in a colour you can’t find a polish for.

Dishwashing Liquid

This is great for treating and removing grease stains. To treat a grease stain, apply a small amount of dishwashing detergent directly to the stain and gently rub the fabric together to evenly spread the soap. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing it. Finally, wash the item according to the wash care label instructions.

If you have small children, make a bubble mixture to help keep them entertained for ages. To create the bubble solution, combine 1/2 a cup of white sugar with 4 cups warm water. Once the sugar is completely dissolved, add 1/2 cup of liquid dish soap! For bigger bubbles, let the mixture sit for a few hours.

Cooking Spray

Cooking spray is a useful product from ensuring your grater stays clean to greasing noisy hinges and runners. To help make cleaning your grater a cinch before you use it, spray it with a little bit of cooking spray. Cooking spray is also great for greasing squeaky hinges and loosening sticky wheels or hinges.
