Taryn Leigh Wardle gave colour-changing mugs with an image of the ultrasound on them that said “Congrats Grandpa” and “Congrats Grandma”. For their second baby, they wrapped up the pregnancy test for Christmas.

Whitney Schafer had some of her wedding photos printed and hid an image of the ultrasound among them that said “Hi Granny”. She gave these to her mother and mother-in-law.

Jessica Raqia waited for a family dinner and wrote the announcement on the inside folds of an origami “toy”. Each section had a family name on it and inside it would state their role. For example, “Michael… is going to have a cousin”.

Shakirah Julius took a picture of a pair of baby shoes and her pregnancy test, adding the words “Baby Julius is on the way”, and sent this to the family WhatsApp group.

With their first pregnancy, Cheyna Dyer simply called everyone to let them know. With their second one, they waited two weeks until it was Mother’s Day. They handed their mothers their gifts and said it was from them and the kids. Both moms caught on quite quickly that the couple had said “kids” and not “kid”.

Elayne Olver says they sent everyone a photo from Chapman’s Peak where they were holidaying. It was also her birthday, so it took people a while to notice what the shirt and catch on!

Abbigail Engelbrecht told her daughter’s dad by organising a mini scavenger hunt comprising little notes that held clues to the next note, ending with him finding her on the couch. She then gave him the test. She told her parents and sister by typing out letters for them as if they were written by her daughter. At first they thought she was pranking them!

When Cee Jay discovered she was carrying twins, she put two hot cross buns in the oven when her parents visited. She then asked her mom to check the “food” in the oven. She opened and asked: “Why are there two buns in your oven?” As soon as she had completed her sentence, she realised what was going on – it took her father a few extra seconds.

Rhea Naidoo gave her brother a box of doughnuts with a note inside the lid. For the grandparents, they got mugs with messages on them. When they told one of their siblings, they took a video while pretending to pose for a photo and instead of saying “cheese” they said they were having a baby – it was a great way to get an honest reaction!

Mariëtte Steyn Bam admits to doing things a little bit differently, and on film. After her grandfather’s eightieth birthday, she gave her mom a packet of sanitary pads. Understandably confused, her mom asked what they were for and Mariëtte told her she would not be needing any for the following nine months.

Stacey Meyer filmed their journey to her gynae and added a picture of the ultrasound at the end of the video. They’ve continued to make little videos every month since. She also asked a baby and child retailer if they could take a few photos in their store and that’s how they announced it on social media.

Angilique Reyneke announced their first baby with a dummy/pacifier – sadly, they lost him at 24 weeks. She used Rascals and baby socks to let everyone know that their Rainbow Baby was on the way.

Lani Ramsamy flew to Durban to surprise her parents. During a braai that evening, she told them to close their eyes and open their hands, then she placed a dummy in their hands.
