If the thought of your preschooler sitting calmly and enjoying some ‘quiet time’ seems laughable, then you’ll love the collaboration between toy manufacturers Mattel and sleep and relaxation app Calm, who have teamed up to create a series of meditations and sleep stories to appeal to an audience aged two to four.
On the partnership the team involved have said, “Our mission is to make the world a happier and healthier place. We’re devoted to helping you (and your children!) live mindfully, sleep better and breathe deeper.”
What is mindfulness?
When the mindfulness revolution experienced another surge of mass popularity in 2020, adults embraced the therapeutic concept of focusing one’s attention on the present moment while recognising and accepting one’s emotions or feelings without judgment. And those who have been regularly practicing mindfulness have reported a significant decrease in stress and anxiety, and an increase in the ability to regulate their emotions.
While mindfulness and meditation might not come naturally to preschool-aged children, it’s a skill that can easily be learned and it has multiple benefits, including teaching little ones to manage difficult emotions, help them build confidence and self-awareness, and can even inspire kindness towards others.
The Calm app now caters for kids
Each of the six meditation is between 4 and 6 minutes long and is fronted by a different Thomas & Friends engine character so kids can Feel Thankful with Thomas, Be Brave with Nia, Make New Friends with Emily, Cool Down with James, Calm Your Worries with Percy or Spread Kindness with Rebecca. The result? Your active child will be able to take a well-deserved moment out of their adventure-packed day to relax, gather their thoughts and self-regulate. Genius!
Calm’s Head of Mindfulness Tamara Levitt says, “It was so much fun creating these sessions. As I got to know each of the lovable engines, it was immediately clear who best represented each theme.”
But the innovative wellness collaboration doesn’t stop there, in addition to the self-soothing meditations, there are three sleep stories designed to have your little one drift off for a more restful night – meaning parents can do the same! The stories are each around 30 minutes long and are narrated by big name actors Kate Winslet, Chike Okonkwo and Mark Moraghan.
At last, the experts have found a way to introduce kids to mindfulness in an engaging and age-appropriate way – plus, parents will reap the behavioural and emotional benefits! Don’t you wish you had access to child-friendly mindfulness teachings like this when you were young?
