Avocado, strawberries, coconut oil, honey and yoghurt. You’d be forgiven for thinking this was a list of ingredients for a smoothie, but actually they’re just a few of the fridge and pantry staples that you can use to DIY a hair mask to treat dry, greasy or damaged hair at home. Plus, they’re all edible (although we don’t recommend it)!
Homemade hair mask for oily or greasy hair
- Yoghurt to strengthen and provide light conditioning, apple cider vinegar to remove oil and lemon to clean your scalp
Take a small tub of plain yoghurt and add two tablespoons apple cider vinegar and the juice of half a lemon – don’t worry if the mixture curdles slightly. Leave on for 10 minutes then rinse well. For a really deep clean that removes build up from the scalp, add two teaspoons baking soda and massage into the scalp just before rinsing. Follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner.

Roughly mash an overripe banana with a tablespoon of honey, then slowly add olive oil until it’s the consistency of baby food. - Coconut oil for deep conditioning, egg yolk for strength and nutrients, and avocado for protein and amino acids
Mash half an avocado with a tablespoon of coconut oil (heat it slightly in your hands so it’s a little more liquid) and one egg yolk. Leave on for around 20 minutes then rinse and follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
